A FEW THINGS ABOUT AFHO

a podcast and colouring book on the untold feminist histories of everyday people and objects in Kenya and beyond!

  • What we're about

We're all about digging deep into the stories that often go untold. Our project, "A Feminist History Of," is a dynamic fusion of a podcast and a zine. We're on a mission to uncover the hidden feminist histories of everyday objects and people – not just in Kenya, but all around the world.

When you know your name, you should hang on to it, for unless it is noted down and remembered, it will die when you do.”-TONI MORRISSON

  • Why we do this

We believe nothing is ever truly lost; it's just waiting to be found! We're here to uncover the stories of the amazing people who paved the way for us, showing how far we've come and proving we're never alone. Our struggles, joys, and histories are all connected and shared.

  • YOU!

    Who we do this for

Our main goal is to shine a spotlight on the stories that have been overlooked for far too long. Through our podcast episodes and zine articles, we aim to educate, inspire, and empower listeners and readers of all ages. We want to challenge the status quo and broaden the narrative of what your own history looks like. DIG DEEP TO FLY HIGH!

We desire to bequeath two things to our children; the first one is roots, the other one is wings ~ Sudanese proverb.

  • What we stand for

At the heart of our project, we're all about highlighting feminist stories and making sure marginalized voices get heard. We believe in creating new histories by recognizing those who came before us and learning from each other. Everyone's story matters, and by sharing these stories, we can make the world more inclusive and fair for everyone.

We hope the journey of discovery is gentle, nourishing, healing and full of love.

  • Praxis

We make our work as inclusive, diverse and accessible as possible. You'll see image descriptions instead of captions as we hope people using screen readers can still engage with us.

Knowledge is power, wisdom is how you use it.

  • Limitations

We sometimes miss out on our own history. "A Feminist History Of" aims to change that by kickstarting a wave of Kenyan feminist documentation. Our zines and podcast episodes are just the beginning, much like the "Hallo Children" primers that inspired us to start we hope this is a stepping stone for you, inspiring deeper exploration and discoveries. We've often been overshadowed by other feminist movements, but we hope this project becomes a roadmap for celebrating Kenya's unique feminist history. We’re not trying to do all the work or even most of it – we’re just here to spark your interest and encourage more amazing projects to come from the "A Feminist History Of" community. We're here to inspire and get the conversation started!

  • 🤓

    Terminology Toolkit

We love it when a single word or phrase captures intense emotions and experiences perfectly. For us, life changed when we discovered words like "misogynoir" and phrases like "structural ugliness." These terms validated our experiences in powerful ways. We hope to build a dictionary of these important terms on our TikTok and website, even though you won't find them in our zines.

  • The Money Policy

    The Money Policy

We make the Zine easily printable and often our first 100 copies are free for those who can't afford it (or anyone really).
We hope to reach a point where the podcast funds the operation but for now it's a labour of love. Feel free to support either us or your community in any creative way you can.

  • The Colouring Book Zine

If creativity is genius at play, we hope you and your friends can talk, color, meditate, and enjoy the cool stories in our zines. Each page is filled with references you can research more or use as conversation starters. It takes a community to communicate, and we hope the coloring brings everyone together.

  • The Podcast

Beyond the professional yapping, our podcast is here to satisfy your curiosity sparked by the zine! Dive deeper into the stories and get the extra scoop on the cool topics we cover. The "A Feminist History Of" podcast takes you behind the scenes, scratching that itch for knowledge and making learning fun and engaging.
